For about 3 years now, after my second birth, i have been struggling to lose some kilos (15 to be more specific). Allow me to tell you from the start that i am not overweight, so for many of you, the struggle might not make sense.
My point is that until the age of 25 i was weighting approx 50 kg (1,67 m in height). By 30 i had already reached 75 kg, basically a 50% increase. The unbalanced lifestyle, inadequate nutrition and the lack of exercise are the 3 main causes of my weight gain.
What motivated me to lose weight? The 20 people (there might have been more :)) ) who asked me, out of the blue, if baby no.3 was coming… At the beginning i thought it was funny, especially when they were offering me their sit in the subway and i’d rather sit than admit that i am not pregnant… Finally i understood that i had to do something about it.
So here i am, August 2017… My starting point was setting a fix meal schedule (3 meals and 2 snacks at the same hour every day) . It worked wonderfully as long as i respected the routine. From 75 kg i went down to 55 kg. Unfortunately this meal plan was not very convenient for my daily routine so after one year i gave up. In 6 months i added back 8 kg.
July 2019…63 kg. I hear for the first time about intermittent fasting and i start the research process.
The easiest method of intermittent fasting, from my perspective, is 16:8. In practice, you have to set an 8 hour window to eat and give your body a minimum 16 hours food rest. Outside the 8 hour window you should not have any intake of calories. Water, tea and coffee (no sugar and no milk added) are allowed. Other popular methods are: fasting for 24 hours, once or twice a week or the 5:2 diet, where you consume only 500 calories on two non-consecutive days of the week, but eat normally the other 5 days.
For me, skipping breakfast worked perfectly (i decided to go this way as in the morning i can keep myself busy with preparing the girls for kindergarten, making the beds, cleaning, dressing and running to the office etc therefore i have no time to think about food). A hot coffee gets me to 12:30 or 1:00 PM when i sit for lunch. During the eating window i have no restrictions. In 2 months since i have adopted this lifestyle, I’ve noticed that my stomach got smaller, i have more energy and i am not bloated anymore. The coolest thing is, that even if i cheated at least once per week, i still lost weight notably.
The biggest minus of intermittent fasting, as you may have already realized, is hunger…once you have it under control, everything else is piece of cake.
Here you can find more information about intermittent fasting. Also, there are many applications to support you with your fasting schedule as well as dedicated groups in social media.
